The Hot Universe

The Watermill Center is pleased to invite you to an afternoon of Open Rehearsals on Saturday, November 12.  Each residency is also in partnership with NYC-based insitutions, established by The Watermill Center to bridge the artist presentation in NYC following their residency

Abbas Akhavan
Phantom Head

Attempts at representing the "mad" have ranged from historical models of physiognomy to abstraction and back again to the physical. But despite what the cause may be, from humors to black biles and other stones, race and sexuality have more often than not played a significant role in the creation of the mad, other, fool, artist, fallen, melancholic, idiot, dummy, dumb-ass, possessed, wild man, beast, and so on – Phantom Head is a video performance that uses madness as an artistic strategy to talk about the collapsed space between the rectum and the head, the enemy with the parent, the mad and the genius, the origins of sacrifice... and so on.

This residency is part of the Watermill / ArteEast residency Partnership.

Abbas is also featured in the upcoming Anti-Artist Talk Series presented by ArteEast at Performa 11.  Click HERE for more information.

Allie Avital Tsypin & Gabrielle Herbst
The Hot Universe

On November 12, 2011, Allie Avital Tsypin and Gabrielle Herbst will present a live multimedia performance at The Watermill Center. With live music for voice and chamber ensemble, sculptural costumes and video, the performance will be a work-in-progress, showcasing the artists' developments at the residency.

In a thorough experimental investigation, long-term collaborators Allie Avital Tsypin (director, designer) and Gabrielle Herbst (composer, vocalist) will explore the hot and cold spaces within nature and fantasy. Through video and live performance they will build a unique environment and language through sound and visuals. The Internet is the cold Arctic; a space where pop culture and female seduction fuse with freezing natural elements, where ethereal vocals and striking visuals communicate the ephemeral qualities of both nature and media, and where images are unattainable, disappearing quickly.

This residency is part of the Watermill / New York Theatre Workshop Partnership.
